Start with what the opening needs to do.
A roof window can bring light into a room without needing to open. If ventilation is part of your brief, the operation, controls and access for maintenance belong in the specification from the beginning.
Atlite lists fixed, manual and electric operation for its Roof Window range, alongside standard and bespoke designs. Its electric Roof Window includes a rain sensor for automatic closure. Confirm the selected size, operating equipment and electrical scope before ordering.
Standard geometry or a bespoke design?
A rectangular opening can follow a hallway or sit above a kitchen bench. A different shape may respond to the building’s architecture. Atlite describes bespoke geometry including triangular and rhombus designs; feasibility and documentation need review for the actual proposal.
Send a dimensioned sketch showing the roof opening and ceiling opening separately. For a replacement, include the existing unit and whether the structure or finished ceiling will change. Do not order from an approximate measurement taken from the room below.
Choose glazing around the room.
Explain the orientation, time of day when direct sun is a concern, privacy needs and whether you need light control. Tint and finish options are available to discuss. Ask for the complete glazing build-up and relevant performance values for the proposed configuration, rather than choosing on colour alone.
What belongs in the installation scope?
- Final product and structural opening dimensions
- Roof pitch, covering, mounting and flashing details
- Fixed, manual or electric operation and exact controls
- Glazing specification and frame finish
- Lightwell, lining, trim and painting responsibilities
- Electrical work, commissioning and maintenance access
Can it fit an existing home?
An existing roof can be considered, but the structure, ceiling, services and access must be assessed. A custom unit can address dimensions; it does not remove the need to review the roof opening. Read our installation and aftercare guide to prepare a complete brief.
